In God Only Must We Wait

Topic: “In God Only Must We Wait” Psalm 62:1-12 David the psalmist said, (Vs. 1) "My soul finds rest in God alone..." Only in God rests (reposes) my soul, only from Him comes my salvation. He lets us see that it is only in God that we have to wait. That is the usual position of faith! But, when the faith in the Lord disappears, despair comes. For the psalmist it is: Only in God! In my soul! In silence! And for you, is the rest of your soul also like that? It is said that speaking is silver, but silence is gold! The patient silence of the Son of God trusting his God is like gold! Martin Luther said: "Stand patient and silent. Do not tell anyone your miseries. Do not yield to the test, nor be dismayed, for God will deliver you at any time."

I. Some think that spilling their sorrows in the heart of a friend is very sweet.

A. But, this is from the soul.

1. He who speaks much of his troubles to others easily falls into the error of speaking little of them to God.

2. When you tell God of your tribulations you experience the blessed relief that flows from the silent conversation with the Eternal One and thus you lose the desire to seek the sympathy of others.

3. Why tell another person seeking relief if God is with you with the miracle that frees you?

4. When telling other people about your tribulation, what you find is that you double the amount.

5. (Vs. 2) "He alone is my rock and my salvation..." David knew what it was like to take refuge in a cave. He knew how secure it was to be in a cavern in THE ROCK! He compares his God with that safe haven! Het is my fortress, I will never be shaken! What he says here about not slipping much is similar to how the boat moves when it is anchored, it moves a little, but it will not be dragged by the storm!

6. When the day comes when you finally decide that the Lord be your salvation then you will no longer be dejected. Not all the demons from hell can alarm the heart that knows that God is his salvation!

7. The man who has given up and surrendered to God renouncing to his I: sings to God and is not happy, cries and is not sad, is zealous for the cause of God but his spirit is in repose! He does not feel so much desire for anything that he cannot leave for God.

8. (Vs. 3) How long will you assault a man? David is amazed at the insistence of his enemies on malice, after so many failures and defeats of some of them. It is indeed amazing that men so willingly follow their vain and sinful ways.

9. There is so much evil in people's lives in the midst of the grace! To persevere in the grace is for man a difficulty so great that it seems impossible, if it wasn't for the divine help.

10. "...this leaning wall, this tottering fence?" Those who do not have a drop of decent blood in their veins expect other men to bow to them and tremble before their presence, but the men who feel strong by faith, they do not see any honor in them but indeed much to despise. It is never good on our part to think a lot about bad people, no matter what their position may be; they are close to their destruction, they stagger and fall like a wall. We will be wise if we stay at a distance, because there is no advantage in being near a wall that is collapsing!

11. (Vs. 4) "...they take delight in lies." Lying is bad enough, but the delight in lying is a black mark of infamy (an evilness used to affect a person's honor). "With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse." Flattery has always been the favorite weapon of

the enemies of good men; they can curse harshly when it is useful to them, but when it suits them to disguise their anger, with soft words they show that they bless those they would smash!

12. "O my soul..." (Vs. 5) "Find rest in God alone." Be still, my soul! Submit yourself completely, stay still, trust in the midst of so much evil, in patience! God is with you. The faith that doesn't mix will not faint. You stand still and God will do! That is to have faith without mixing!

13. (Vs. 7) "My salvation and my honor depend on God..." In whom are we going to take glory but in Him who saves us? Our honor corresponds to the One who secures our souls. For us Christ is the badge of our shield! "God is my mighty rock, my refuge." He is my expectation, my rock, my salvation, my glory, my strength and my refuge.

14. (Vs. 8) "Trust in Him at all times..." Faith is a permanent duty. To wait, to trust is the elevated act, it is the exercise of faith. Our faith will be according to our faith!

15. (Vs. 9) "Lowborn men are but a breath..." Men today say of Jesus: Hosanna, and tomorrow, crucify him! Everything is a lie. They promise a lot and at the end, when you trust them, they only produce disappointments. "If weighed on a balance, they are; together they are only a breath." Trusting oneself is the worst. As if any man was not subject to mortal sin, to weakness, subjected to sickness and death! Man is nothing!

16. (Vs. 10) "Do not trust in extorsion or take pride in stolen goods..." He who puts his trust for salvation in another, except in God, not only loses salvation, but also steals from God the glory and he does wrong to God. "Though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them." Do not think that because of that you are greater, for you do not rest in man, nor do you rest in money. Gain and fame are only like the lather of the sea.

17. (Vs. 11) "...two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong." The faith is never abandoned, unless the soul questions the power of God. It does not please God when his power is put in doubt by you.

18. (Vs. 12) Mercy comes from God. God is full of mercy that belongs to Him. It is as if all the mercy of the universe proceeded from God and all of it was claimed by Him as His possession.

19. "Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done." God has never done, nor does, nor will He do any evil to any creature. Only in God can we trust! Amen.
