Pride

"Pride" – Proverbs 16:18 Pride is exaggerated or elevated self-esteem (valuation = self-love). Pride can lead us to conceit, boasting, presumption, or vanity. Pride can also be related to haughtiness (being preferred to others, arrogance, conceited, showing off, having a high concept of oneself) has an imperious and sometimes already unhealthy need to receive praise. When these self-recognitions are transformed into arrogance, their objective becomes to feed their ego and their own vanity (vain, empty, lack of physical or mental content).

I. And it's very easy to be proud.

A. When there is pride, there is full arrogance.

1. Someone haughty, vain.

2. Haughtiness, in this way, is associated with pride.

3. The disordered appetite to be preferred to others.

4. The lightning strikes the tall tree and in the same way, God causes those who are puffed up to fall.

5. Conceited people often suffer from some very humiliating experience, designed to deflate them.

6. It only takes a small pin to puncture a large balloon.

7. The cause of Lucifer's fall was haughtiness (Marlowe) aspiring (desiring, willing), haughtiness (pride, haughtiness) and insolence (daring, excessive, pride, arrogant) for which God threw him from the face of heaven.

8. (Psalm 10:2) With arrogance (haughty, conceited, pride) the wicked persecute the poor.

9. The accusation is divided into two distinct parts: arrogance and tyranny (dictatorship, oppression), one being the root of the other.

10. Pride is the egg of persecution.

11. Pride is a vice that clings so firmly to the hearts of man, that, if we were to throw off our faults one after another, we should certainly find it to be the last and the most difficult to uproot.

12. No one will dispute God's justice when He hangs every Haman on his own gallows and throws every one of His Daniels' enemies into their own lions' dens (C.H.S.).

13. (Psalm 73:6) Their crown of pride (pride, haughtiness) crowns them.

14. If they could, they would ride above all humanity.

15. Their clothes are violence.

16. A chain of pearls does not fit their necks, nor rich garments adorn their shoulders, but it is sin, according to them, that which is suitable for their souls, and they rejoice in their shamelessness (boldness, impudence).

17. If in your youth you live a dissolute life (depraved, vices, given over to pleasures) and boast of what you should regret (George Swinnock).

18. (Proverbs 11:2) First pride and then the fall and then the dishonor and shame that accompany the fall.

19. Pride is a shame to man, who has been formed from the dust of the earth, to live on alms, since he depends on God in everything and with pride, he loses the right to possess all that he has.

20. The haughty man makes himself contemptible; it is a sin for which God very often brings men down to the lowest, as He did Nebuchadnezzar and Herod, whose dishonor, reproach, and shame came immediately after their vainglory.

21. Just as in pride there is need, because it brings dishonor, so with the humble is wisdom.

22. Humility reduces the chance of falling.

23. (Proverbs 16:18) The higher the haughty one climbs, the greater the fall he suffers.

24. God in His justice, brings down (diminish in strength, intensity, afflict, sink, destroy) to the ground those who have wanted to ascend to heaven (do you think you can defy God, without suffering?).

25. Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Herod, are examples of this.

26. When the haughty begin to defy God, their fall is at the door.

27. Let us not therefore fear the pride of others but let us greatly fear God lest we ourselves fall into such wickedness.

28. "The farmer plows his field in preparation for reaping a crop."

29. Similarly, pride and ambition metaphorically lead to the tilling of the ground for the wicked, for their machinations, whose aim is sinful.

30. (1 John 2:16) He exhorts his readers to remain separate from the world and all that the world offers, for the love of God and the love of the world are incompatible.

31. "Do not love the world for the simple reason that love for the world is not compatible” (combinable, it does not match).

32. The devil opposes Christ and the flesh is contrary to the Spirit, so the world is contrary to (Christ) the Father.

33. Worldliness is the love of passing things.

34. The human heart can never find satisfaction in things. (L. Moody's tombstone: "he who does the will of God abides forever.") Amen
