Blood is Life - Leviticus 17:10-16 Repetition and confirmation of the law prohibiting eating blood. It also says so in Levitical law (3:17; 7:26), in addition to its place in the precepts (command or order) given to Noah (Genesis 9:4).

I. The ban is repeated over and over again, and reference is made to previous prohibitions. (V. 12).

A. A great emphasis is placed on it, as on something that has much more importance than it seems at first glance.

1. It is imposed as obligatory, not only for the house of Israel, but also for the foreigners who dwell among them (v.10).

2. The penalty (which is linked to which it depends or with which it is closely related) of this law is very severe; death penalty (V.10).

3. The reason for this law is given, in the fullest way: For it is the blood that makes atonement (atone = to blot out faults, to purify itself from them by sacrifice) of the person (v. 11), since the life of the flesh is in the blood.

4. Jesus' life was in His blood, and He gave His life and His blood covers you.

5. This is the reason why blood is not eaten.

6. "When life is laid in blood" and there is life while there is blood, God established that the blood of sacrifice be shed on the altar to indicate that the life of the sacrificial victim (Jesus) "was offered to God" instead of the life of the sinner, as a ransom; Therefore, "without bloodshed, there is no forgiveness of sins. (Hebrews 9:22)

7. This is the reason for not eating blood.

8. Now it is no longer animal blood.

9. For this reason, one could not (V.15) eat dead animal (without vigor, turned off) or torn to pieces by beast, the person was unclean until night.

10. (Acts 15:20) (V.13) James answered by saying, Men and brothers, hear me.

11. He repeats what it says: (Amos 9:11,12).

12. James suggested that, in writing to the church in Antioch, the Saints there should be warned to turn away from the defilements of idols, fornication, drowning (strangled), and blood.

13. James did not return to the law, he knew Jesus face to face.

14. Avoid breakages in the early church:

a. The defilements of idols (Acts 15:29). In the verse this is explained as food offered to idols. If believers of gentility kept eating those things, then "their Jewish brethren might seriously wonder if they had abandoned idolatry." If they ate those meats, then they partook of sacrifices. Although Gentile Christians could be free to eat such things, it could be a stumbling block for the weak Jewish brethren who are the majority (the weak) and therefore so much freedom would be wrong.

b. Fornication. This was the main sin of the Gentiles. It was therefore especially important that James should include this with the other points mentioned. Nowhere in

the Bible is the commandment to abstain from sexual immorality or fornication ever revoked. It is universally applicable to all ages.

c. The drowned. This prohibition dates back to the covenant with God made with Noah after the flood. (Genesis 9:4). Thus, it is a commandment in force (strength, energy, validity) for the human race and not just for the nation of Israel.

d. Blood. This also goes back to Genesis 9:4 and thus precedes (going ahead, superiority, advantaged, advanced) the law of Moses. Since the Covenant with Noah was "never" abrogated (annulled, revoked), we consider that these norms remain in force (force, validity) for us.

15. Because the life of the flesh is in the blood.

16. The blood has been given for atonement (the removal of guilt or sin through a third party).

17. The blood of Christ as a sacrifice for our sins.

18. Those chosen people must have seen that the Christ was being an atonement for them and for the Gentile, as (15:17) James clearly said, spoken prophetically.

19. First animals, then established: The blood of Christ is the life that is in you, through His blood shed in us. Amen.
