"The Lord is my Banner of War" Exodus 17:8-16 The Lord is my flag. A nomadic tribe that stole; they were descendants of Esau, who hated his brother Jacob for having snatched his birthright. It may be that this attack by Amalek was an echo of hereditary enmity. (Deuteronomy 25:18) How he came out on the road and disrupted the rearguard "of all the weak" who were behind you, when you were tired, worked, and they had no fear of God.

I. It was a miraculously saved camp.

A. They didn't know what they were doing.

1. Joshua is mentioned for the first time.

2. He is the commander of this first war against those who want to extinguish them.

3. Moses prays and holds the rod of God in his hand.

4. Joshua fights.

5. The rod is raised by Moses to encourage the Israelites.

6. He excites the soldiers with the rod, it was a flag.

7. It was a prayer antenna of Moses; it was the intercessor who appealed to God for success and victory.

8. Someone said: Prayer is the strength of man and the weakness of God (Deuteronomy 32:9-14).

9. His great love is not a lack of power and mastery.

10. Moses was getting tired: Moses' hands were getting tired, they were heavy.

11. It does not say that Joshua's hands were tired of fighting, but it does say that Moses' hands were tired of praying.

12. (M.H.) He says: The more spiritual a service is, the greater the danger we have of failing or faltering in it.

13. The power of the rod that determined the intervention that could be obtained for the triumph of Moses' battle for Israel.

14. This is the influence that Moses' rod had on battle: When Moses raised his hand in prayer, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered his hand Amalek prevailed.

15. How diligent they were to hold Moses' hands.

16. When he could no longer stand, he sat on a stone (Exodus 17:12); when he could no longer hold his hands up, they had to be held.

17. Moses, the man of God, is reassured that he was helped by his brother Aaron and Hur.

18. Thus, there was firmness in his hands, faith, faithfulness until the sun went down.

19. Having Moses praying high on the mountain for them and Joshua before them on the battlefield, we must know that it served as a great encouragement to the people of Israel.

20. The defeat of Amalek (Exodus 17:13).

21. Victory had been in the air for some time between the two camps, but Israel kept fighting until Joshua undid Amalek.

22. Joshua was fighting with many disadvantages.

23. Soldiers muttering about food.

24. They didn't know about war discipline and any other.

25. The weapons were not known to them, they were slaves not warriors, nor defenders of Egypt.

26. In their slavery they were experienced for a long time.

27. God, however, worked through them a great salvation.

28. (Exodus 17:15) Moses worried that God would have the glory of that victory.

29. He raised an altar in honor of God and what is most carefully recorded in the story is the inscription on the altar: Jehovah Nissi, Jehovah is my flag (banner).

30. It refers to the rod of God raised as a flag of this military action.

31. Jehovah's presence and power were the banner under which they were enlisted, for it they had been encouraged, and had "stood firm."

32. God sought to give posterity comfort and profit through the remembrance of such a victory (Exodus 17:14): Write this for remembrance in a book and repeat it to the ears of Joshua (Hebrew) it was like saying, "Entrust this memorial to him, that he may pass it on to generations to come."

33. Moses is to begin now to keep a journal of what happens to the people of Israel.

34. In the first mention we find in the Bible about writing.

35. Write down what has been done.

36. May the ages to come know that God fights for His people, "and that he who touches His people touches the apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8).

37. Write down what needs to be done.

38. That, over the years, Amalek will be totally destroyed.

39. Israel will undoubtedly triumph, at last, in the fall of Amalek.

40. This sentence was executed in part by Saul (1 Samuel 15) and completed by David (1 Samuel 30; 2 Samuel 1:1; 8:12).

41. After that, even the name of Amalek disappears.

42. (Exodus 17:16) That in the meantime, God would have constant war against Amalek.

43. This was written to warn Israel that it should never unite with the Amalekites.
