"Why do you get down, O My soul? Psalm 42:5-11 C.H.S. Finding out the cause of our grief (sadness) is often the best surgery for it. Ignorance is not happiness; in this case it is misery. The fog of ignorance increases our cause for alarm; a clear vision will make it appear that monsters are trifles (no value, insignificant, unimportant). It is to build a building in a grain of sand.

I. We must think about how we feel with the heaviness of our soul.

A. Even if you don't feel it, so you can feel it.

1. To know that there is a sorrow (sadness) that works repentance that should not be repented. Knowing that there is a sorrow that "consumes to death."

2. The wicked oppress David and "the devil tempts him" with everything; he rebukes his own heart and nothing else.

3. David does not rebuke Saul or Absalom, but rebukes and "looks at his own heart." Why do you fold down, O my soul?

4. Although the devil tempts and the wicked oppress as instruments of punishment for sin; In spite of everything, we, like David, must rebuke our own heart and the problem is in our hearts, not in the devil, not in the wicked.

5. Why are you troubled within me? "You are in tumult" (mutiny, confusion, riot produced by a crowd, screams, disorder).

6. "Wait on God." Hope never produces more joy than in affliction.

7. It is in the cloud that carries water that the sun paints the curious colors of the rainbow.

8. There are two graces that Christ uses especially to fill the soul with joy: faith and hope.

9. Faith tells the soul what Christ has done for it and thus comforts and invigorates it; hope enlivens the soul "with the news of what Christ will do."

10. "Wait on God; for I am yet to praise Him."

11. Who would have thought that when Jonah was refusing what God wanted, he was in waters, that he would preach in Nineveh?

12. Who would have thought that when Nebuchadnezzar was in the woods (Daniel 4) that he would reign again in Babylon?

13. Who would have thought when Joseph was sold by his brothers that they would seek him "as their servants"?

14. Who would have thought when Job scratched his sores sitting on the ashes of the garbage, his houses consumed by fire, his stolen cattle, and his dead children that he would be much richer than he ever was?

15. Such are the actions of divine mercy that make the righteous exclaim by singing: The Lord has triumphed gloriously (Exodus 15:21); He has cast the horse and the rider into the sea.

16. Do not believe that it is enough to "silence your heart" so that it does not argue with God, but that you must not cease until you have placed it where you rest sweetly in Him.

17. Holy David came this far, not only rebuked his soul for its restlessness (uneasiness), but "charged it with trusting in God."

18. When the Lord locks us in and limits our freedom for a while, we want to break through on our own, using all the resources of our hearts to pass through the walls of His providence. Whereas, if we waited trusting in His promise and submitted to His

disposition, we could more easily endure confinement and "without wounds" we would end up regaining freedom; because God makes His decision and Who can change it? He will make what He has decreed about us happen.

19. What bothers the poor beast is not the weight of burden, but the ties on its loins; thus, it is not the weight of external evils, but the internal stinging (itching, burning) of a bitter conscience, not purified or cured by faith that afflicts and troubles the poor creature.

20. My God (Psalm 42:6) My soul is downcast within me... "Therefore, I will remember you."

21. The dawn is wise in the memory of our special occasions "of conversation with heaven"; we may need them another day when the Lord is slow to return us from among those cast out and our souls ache and tremble.

22. A light behind (special occasions with the Creator) that brightens our present darkness.

23. (Psalm 42:7) One abyss call another to the voice of your waterfalls.

24. An immense whirlwind that rushes into the sea and has stirred and increases the whirlpool and turbulence of the waves.

25. A raging sea, a cloudy sky, tempestuous (storm) and the roar of thunder added to the tumult (noise). A ship in the middle of that storm.

26. This is how David compares the state of his soul when submerged under a sea of afflictions he says, "All the waves and your breakers have swept over me."

27. How alive must have been his feeling of anguish on that occasion to make use of a comparison so he expresses the most extreme fear!

28. All your waves and your breakers have swept over me.

29. Experience unknown to newborns in grace, but quite common to those who travel through the deep waters of affliction; it is a comfort to remember "that the waves and breakers are of the Lord."

30. (Psalm 42:8) But by day Jehovah will command His mercy.

31. No day shall dawn upon the heir of grace, finding him completely abandoned by the Lord; The Lord reigns and "is a sovereign who with authority commands that mercy be reserved for the chosen."

32. "And at night" is the happiest moment for the pious.

33. And my prayer to the God of my life. David's life, religion, "was prayer."

34. (Psalm 42:9) Why will I be mourning the oppression of the enemy?

35. When the trial is underway, the Lord's plan (purpose, plan) in sending it becomes easier to carry. (Psalm 42:10) Telling me every day: Where is your God?

36. When the talks make you go crazy, are the enemies; it would have been so if David had not resorted to prayer and made the persecutions of his enemies a reason for pleading with his Lord.

37. (V. 11) "Hope" is like the sun, which when we head towards it casts the shadow of our burden behind.

38. I will wait on God; for I am yet to praise Him, my salvation, and my God.

39. Hope in God, who is your God; therefore, I will live and praise God.

40. God, our hope at all times.
