God Is Light

TOPIC: "God Is Light" 1 John 1:5-10 The message that we have heard from Him and is told to the church is that God is light and there is no darkness in Him (Vs. 5)! John begins to instruct believers regarding the requirements for the communion with God! Communion is the union of two or more in something common! John knew what he was saying because he knew communion with Jesus, and he wants to teach it to us believers.

I. The purpose is that we can enjoy true fellowship with God.

A. First, one must "submit" (accept authority, abandon, surrender) to the standards of holiness that emanate from the infinitely holy God.

1. God is light and in Him there is no darkness (Vs. 5).

2. God is absolutely holy, absolutely just, and absolutely pure.

3. God cannot look with favor at any form of sin.

4. Nothing is hidden from him, because "...everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account." Hebrews 4:13

B. (Vs. 6) So, the way we can have communion with God is by walking in the light and not in darkness.

1. There can be no concealment of sin in our lives.

2. Brother, let's understand that light and darkness cannot exist together in a person's life.

3. If you are in darkness, then you cannot be in communion with God.

4. If you claim to have fellowship with Him and habitually walk in darkness, you have never really been saved at all.

C. (Vs. 7) HE WHO LIVES IN LIGHT AND WALKS IN LIGHT CAN HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH THE LORD JESUS AND WITH THE BROTHERS.

1. If you do not have and cannot have communion with the brothers, you are not in the light.

2. Either we are in light or, on the contrary, we are in darkness.

3. If anyone is in the light, he is a MEMBER OF THE FAMILY OF GOD!

4. He who is in darkness has nothing in common with God, because God has no darkness in Him.

5. Because the darkness is of Satan, he conquered it by his wickedness, hatred and division with God.

6. Those who walk in the light have fellowship with one another AND THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST CONTINUOUSLY CLEANSES THEM FROM ALL SIN.

7. All God's forgiveness is based ON THE BLOOD OF HIS SON that was shed on Calvary!

8. This “BLOOD” provided God with A RIGHT BASE on which he can forgive sins, AND THE BLOOD WILL NEVER LOSE ITS POWER!

9. It has PERMANENT EFFECTIVENESS to cleanse us from sin!

10. Naturally, believers MUST CONFESS BEFORE THEY CAN RECEIVE FORGIVENESS.

D. (Vs. 8) Communion with God requires that the truth be in us.

1. Communion demands that we recognize THE TRUTH ABOUT OURSELVES

2. Denying that we have a nature of sin indicates self-deception and falsehood.

3. Sin is our nature, a nature that is corrupt and evil.

4. We talk about sin regarding the evilness we have committed.

5. This is the reality of our lives: what we are is much worse than what we have ever committed.

6. But, praise the Lord, that Christ died for our sin (nature) and for our sins!

7. Although conversion does not eliminate the nature of sin, IT DOES BRING US THE IMPLANTATION OF A NEW NATURE FROM GOD! We now have the power to live victoriously over the sin that dwells within us!

E. (Vs. 9) To walk daily in communion with God and with our fellow believers, WE ARE TO CONFESS OUR SINS!

1. Brethren, these are all sins: sins of commission (of participation, of action), sins of omission (of failing to say or do), sins of thought, secret sins, and public sins.

2. WE ARE TO DRAG ALL OF OUR SINS TO THE OPEN FIELD BEFORE GOD, CALL THEM BY THEIR NAMES AND THEN GET ON GOD'S SIDE AGAINST THEM AND LET THEM GO!

3. Yes, brother, true confession involves the abandonment of sins!

4. God is faithful and just to forgive us!

5. He has promised to forgive and keep His promise!

6. God is just to forgive (Vs. 9) because he has found a just basis for forgiveness, which is the substitute work (he replaced us, he put himself in our place) of the Lord Jesus on the Cross.

7. To cleanse us from all iniquity!

8. THIS IS HOW WE CAN ENTER TO HAVE COMMUNION WITH OUR GOD!

F. (Vs. 10) We should not deny that we have committed acts of sin.

1. God is not a liar!

2. MAY EVERY SIN BE REMOVED BEFORE HIS PRESENCE, CONFESSED AND ABANDONED!

3. Let's be frank, open about our condition, let's stop the hypocrisy and the concealment of who we really are.

4. God is light and through him we are of the light, not of the darkness, TO HAVE COMMUNION WITH HIM! Amen.
